Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate admitted his first taste of derby success as a manager was extra-special after heaping more woe upon Newcastle counterpart Glenn Roeder at the Riverside Stadium.

Obafemi Martins missed the best chance when he lobbed the ball onto the crossbar in the 14th minute with keeper Mark Schwarzer stranded, while James Milner also shot wide in the second half.

Roeder said: "It is a case that too often this year so far we have shot ourselves in the foot and lost games we shouldn't have. We need to pick ourselves up off the floor again and stride on forward."

It had started promisingly for the Magpies, on a high after their midweek UEFA Cup win over Fenerbahce and with the fleet-footed Martins apparently in the mood to make an impression.

Boro barely got a look-in for the first 20 minutes until Stewart Downing forced an acrobatic save out of Steve Harper and Jason Euell hit a long-range effort inches wide.

Roeder added: "Undoubtedly we should have won because of the superiority we had in the first half. But when you do not take your chances you always feel it may come back to haunt you.

"I thought we were in control in the first half and the second half was more even. I know Steven Taylor made a fantastic goal-line clearance but we had chances at the other end."

Newcastle substitute Shola Ameobi shot tamely at Schwarzer as the visitors ended the half on top but Boro began to threaten to make a breakthrough early in the second half.

Harper flipped a Downing free-kick around the post and Euell blazed over the bar from close range while at the other end Damien Duff broke free but shot straight at Schwarzer.

Ultimately it was left to Yakubu to rise highest to meet Downing's corner from the left and nod home a rare headed winner to take his personal tally for the season to four.

Southgate added: "It was a fantastic delivery from Stewart and the only surprise was Yakubu was on the end of it with his head. But we have worked on it and it was nice to see some reward."
