Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate is hoping to be forced to hand teenage midfielder Lee Cattermole an even bigger contract before very long.

The 18-year-old last week put pen to paper on a new four-year deal which will see him tied to the Riverside Stadium until 2010 after a superb first few months in senior football.

However, Southgate has now challenged the Stockton-born youngster to prove he is more than a flash in the pan by fulfilling his potential on a sustained basis.

Cattermole only made his Premiership debut in the derby clash with Newcastle at St James' Park at the turn of the year, but his combative style has proved a huge hit with his team-mates and the fans alike.

Yet another product of the club's hugely-successful Academy, he has already been selected for the England's Under-21 squad and big things are being predicted for him on Teesside.

That expectation has come as no surprise to Southgate after his years at the club.

He said: "Having lived here and played for the club for the past five years, I know his attitude epitomises what Teessiders want and demand in a player.

"They like a quality footballer, but they want to see a physically competitive edge too, and Lee has that in abundance.

"That is why they've taken to him in such a big way."

However, for all the high points Cattermole has enjoyed in his short career to date, he first sprang to national prominence in one of his club's darkest hours.

The teenager was part of the Boro side which went down 4-0 at home to Aston Villa on February 4 this year, sparking calls for then manager Steve McClaren's to be sacked.

Cattermole was famously seen leaving the field with tears in his eyes as the club's season reached its low point.

Southgate, who captained the team that day, told the club's official website, www.mfc.co.uk: "It was a sign he cared.

"But it was also a reminder that he was a young man in a big arena, which is something we have to remember about all the young players we are bringing through."
