Southgate Eases Pressure On Boro

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate has urged his players not to try too hard as they attempt to turn their season around. Last Saturday's 1-0 Barclays Premiership win over West Ham eased the pressure on the Teessiders after successive league defeats by Manchester City and Watford.

But inconsistency has been rife at the Riverside Stadium this season and as he heads into Saturday evening's clash with Liverpool, Southgate wants his players to relax if they are to produce their best on a sustained basis.
He said: "Sometimes players try almost too hard because people in the dressing room are desperate to do well and they really want to put things right.
"They perhaps take on too much responsibility. It is important there is no pressure from within this football club for the players to do anything other than what they are good at.
"I know what good players we have here. They are predominantly a young group and it is important they do not feel the pressure that is been put on from outside."
The win over the Hammers left Boro in 13th place in the league table, five points clear of the drop zone, but just six off Portsmouth in sixth.
Their season to date has included plenty of high points - home victories over Chelsea, Everton and Newcastle - and lows - a 4-0 home defeat by Portsmouth and losses to promoted trio Reading, Sheffield United and Watford.
However, Southgate insists he has faith in his largely inexperienced squad, and has reminded them no prizes are handed out for some time yet.
He said: "I want to win games. We are not as high up the league as we would like to be.
"But it is a 38-game season and we will be judged over that period. We must not fall into the trap of making short-term decisions.
"But the message is that I do not feel any pressure. We are just at the beginning of a long season, really, and there is a long way to go.
"You are not judged as a team over 11 or 12 games. It is a long way before we will finally be judged as a team this season."
Boro were indebted to the contribution of substitute Massimo Maccarone last weekend as he again came off the bench to win a game, although whether that was enough to earn him a return to the starting line-up in the absence of the injured Mark Viduka remains to be seen.
Julio Arca played and scored for the reserves in midweek and could be in back contention, but while Chris Riggott and Ugo Ehiogu also played in that game, they may have to remain patient.
