Boro manager Gareth Southgate decided not to risk bringing the England winger back for the weekend draw at Aston Villa following a groin injury, but is confident he will be available to face the Red Devils.
Southgate said: "Stewart could possibly have played at Villa but I wasn't prepared to take the chance with the injury. It is important I look beyond the short term.
"He is a valuable asset and I didn't want to play him at Villa Park and lose him for four or five games.
"It is difficult to take that decision with a player of quality - and Stewart was very keen to play. But I think it was the right decision for him. Last year he played in a game for us he shouldn't have played in and missed three months.
"I have to weigh those things up. Looking after his welfare is more important than anything, but Stewart will be available against Manchester United."
Southgate believes midfielder George Boateng is showing signs of returning to his best form after coming in for criticism for some performances.
The Boro boss praised Boateng for still wanting to play when he has been less than 100% fit.
He said: "He has been criticised and I can understand why but, when I see his desire to do well and his desire to still get out there with some of the knocks he has been carrying, it is a good sign.
"Leadership takes on different aspects and, that for me, is a sign of a winner.
"There have been a couple of times when I almost had physically to drag him off the field because I felt it was the right thing for the team. But his performance at Villa Park was George back to his best."
Southgate has his sights on the future after being given the go-ahead by the Premier League to stay as manager despite not having his Pro Licence.
He said: "It has not been an issue for me. It is not something I could influence. What I could influence was the players in the dressing room and the team I select.
"We have tried to say all along it wouldn't be an issue. The chairman said to me whatever happened, I would be in charge of the team albeit with a different title.
"We have a clear vision of what we want to do at Boro. Now there is plenty of work to be done."

It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that we have been publishing arbitrage bets for three seasons now and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.
