Middlesbrough, with just one win to show from their last eight league games, desperately need the points, but manager Southgate knows there will be no old pals act with his opposite number, who is equally keen to win the televised tussle.
The Boro boss and Coleman were both regulars at Crystal Palace in the early to mid-1990s and forged a strong friendship that has lasted to the present day.
Rookie Southgate, who was 35 when he replaced Steve McClaren in June, is actually a month older than the Fulham boss, who celebrated his 36th birthday in October.
Coleman was just 32 when he took over at the Cottage in April 2003 and he has defied the odds to stay in charge for three-and-a-half years.
Reflecting on that fact, Southgate said: "He's done a fantastic job at Fulham, though I am biased as I'm a good friend of his.
"We're very close, I've spoken to him a lot recently and I was actually at a lunch with him last week. There will be plenty of ribbing whatever happens on the night.
"Chris has done a terrific job at Fulham," he added. "He's shown great maturity, he went straight from playing to managing with just a brief spell of coaching in between.
"He had to pick up the pieces there very quickly because Jean Tigana went late in the season, but he's coped with it well.
"He's always been a good leader. At Palace I was the skipper but we had a lot of good leaders in the dressing room and Chris was certainly one."
Southgate would be happy to emulate Coleman's first full season in charge, when Fulham finished ninth in the table.
And he admitted that after accepting the Boro job he spoke to his friend about the challenges ahead.
"I can see a lot of similarities with my own situation," said the former England international. "Chris is a great example to me. He went into management aged 32 and he's done a great job.
"We did have a chat just after I decided to take the job - really, just for a bit of advice. He was on holiday at the same time as me and I know his family particularly well, so we met up for a chat.
"We talked things through and he marked my card about a few things and it's always helpful to talk to guys in the know.
"He's a great character and I can look at and learn from what he's done. He's a strong person, always has been, and he won't stand for any nonsense."
For Boro to win they will need to overcome the absence of three key defenders.
Emanuel Pogatetz is suspended, while Robert Huth (foot) and Abel Xavier (hamstring) are injured.
Stuart Parnaby is poised to fill in at right-back while Chris Riggott is expected to play alongside Jonathan Woodgate in the centre of defence.
Lee Cattermole returns from suspension in midfield.

This method of betting was used very successfully during the World Cup and you can read all about how it was done right here.
It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that we have been publishing arbitrage bets for three seasons now and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.
Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
