The 31-year-old Australian will lead the line for the Teessiders tomorrow as they head into their must-win clash with Charlton knowing anything less than that could see them drop into the relegation zone.
A return of just six points from the last nine league games has inevitably left rookie manager Southgate in the spotlight, and while Viduka believes he has got what it takes to turn things around, he admits he would not relish the task.
Viduka said: "It is not an easy job being a manager. I have been playing football for a long time and I think it would be very difficult if somebody told me next year I was manager.
"In that position, I would not know what to do. But Gareth has taken to it very well. He is going to be a good manager.
"After playing football for so long and being through all the ups and downs, you start learning how to deal with these things.
"It is probably different being a manager because once the players go across that line, there is nothing much you can do, apart from half-time talks and whatever.
"But he is coping quite well and a few results over Christmas - if we can get a string of wins together - we could come into the new year in a great position.
"But it could go the other way, obviously."
Charlton's visit to the Riverside Stadium signals the beginning of a crucial period for Boro who will head for Everton and Blackburn before meeting Sheffield United on New Year's Day.
Having won none of their last six games, a run which culminated in Monday night's 2-1 defeat at Fulham, Southgate's are in 17th place and clear of West Ham immediately below them only on goal difference.
Viduka admits the next four games could have a major say in how their season pans out.
He said: "They will be very influential. We can come out of the Christmas period in a good state or in a very bad state.
"If we can get a few wins together, it would be great for us.
"Every one is a must-win for us for now. Charlton are struggling, but it is very difficult to play against teams who are struggling because they are desperate, and when teams are desperate, they fight for everything.
"Everybody is going to think it is an easy game and a sure three points, but they are not easy games."
Viduka's return from broken toes has given Southgate a major boost with Aiyegbeni Yakubu struggling for goals this season and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink now at the Valley.
The former Leeds and Celtic man collected his third of the season at Craven Cottage and is relishing the pressure of firing his side out of trouble.
Viduka, who is in the final year of his contract and revealed no offer of an extension has yet been made, said: "That is basically what I have been under my whole career.
"But I like it, I like a challenge and I like my job.
"When I come in, I want to do my best and play in as many games as I can."
Defender Jonathan Woodgate will return from an ankle injury, while Emanuel Pogatetz is available following a one-match ban.

This method of betting was used very successfully during the World Cup and you can read all about how it was done right here.
It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that we have been publishing arbitrage bets for three seasons now and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.
Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
