The Teessiders will head for their tricky FA Cup third-round clash with Coca-Cola Championship Hull on Saturday having restored order in the Barclays Premiership with seven points from a possible 12 over the holiday period.
That run of results, which included home victories over Charlton and Sheffield United, has eased Boro into 15th place, six points clear of the relegation zone, although there is no room for complacency.
Southgate will target a striker and midfield reinforcements during the transfer window and will also off-load those members of his squad who have become surplus to requirements.
However, 20-year-old Morrison, one of the youngsters who has emerged from the club's academy to stake a claim for a regular place in the first-team, is happy to prove himself all over again.
He said: "You fight for your place every week in training. We need players to come in and give us that bit more firepower, and I am sure any arrivals will help us much more than disrupt us."
What Southgate does not need this weekend is to find himself on the wrong end of an FA Cup shock after seeing his side dumped out of the Carling Cup by League Two Notts County last September.
The Tigers, who have appointed former Bolton number two Phil Brown as their new manager, currently lie in 21st place in the Championship table after Monday's 2-1 victory at Sheffield Wednesday, and three points shy of safety.
Boro will hope they have turned a corner over Christmas - five goals in six games for striker Aiyegbeni Yakubu, who has benefited immensely from Mark Viduka's return from injury, has made a massive difference.
That has eased the pressure on Southgate, who has had to handle the pressure of an unwelcome brush with the lower reaches of the Premiership at the same time as stamping his mark on his squad.
Morrison said: "I found it a bit strange at the start, but he is learning with every game and I am sure he can lead us on.
"He has cracked the whip a few times. It has been a bit strange, but it has been at the right times.
"All the players are fully behind him and respect him as a manager, and I am sure he will lead us to big things."
Jonathan Woodgate limped out of the Sheffield United game with a knee problem and is a doubt, while Andrew Davies will hope to overcome an ankle injury.

It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking.
