The central defender, who also missed Saturday's Barclays Premiership game at Chelsea, is still suffering tightness in a hamstring, after picking up the injury in England's friendly against Spain last week.

Midfielder Julio Arca, who went over on an ankle at Chelsea, faces a late fitness test.

Boro will definitely be without South Korean striker Dong-Gook Lee, who was not signed in time to be registered for the first meeting between the two teams at Ashton Gate in January.

Goalkeeper Chris Weale will make his full debut for Bristol City, but the Robins are without six players for the trip north.

Weale, a free summer signing from West County rivals Yeovil, made his first appearance for the club on Saturday as a 65th-minute substitute after Adriano Basso was sent off for deliberately handling the ball outside of the 18-yard box.

Brazilian Basso misses the game through suspension and captain Louis Carey also begins a two-match ban after collecting his 10th yellow card of the season in the defeat at Scunthorpe last week.

Forwards Wayne Andrews and Kevin Betsy and midfielder Brian Wilson are cup-tied having already featured in the competition's earlier rounds for Coventry, Wycombe and Cheltenham respectively. Steve Brooker remains sidelined with a troublesome hamstring injury.

Richard Keogh is likely to replace Carey at the heart of defence while Craig Woodman, Liam Fontaine, David Noble, Alex Russell and Jennison Myrie-Williams are also in line for recalls.

Full-back Jamie McAllister received his 10th booking of the season in the 1-1 draw against Huddersfield, but his two-match suspension does not start until the weekend.
