Spurs continued to keep control despite Stewart Downing's sporadic runs down the flank, with Berbatov again coming close in the 23rd minute when he blazed over the bar from a tight angle.

Boro were almost made to pay moments later when Berbatov launched another swift counter-attack and his cross from the right missed Keane in front of goal by a matter of inches.

With Berbatov causing havoc in the Boro box, midfielder Didier Zokora fancied his chances of increasing Spurs' lead, but blasted an ambitious long-range effort over the bar in the 37th minute.

Boro came close to a barely deserved equaliser in the 43rd minute when Viduka turned in a crowded box and struck a low shot inches wide of target.

Berbatov did not take long to make a huge impression on the second half as he hooked home a simply magnificent second goal within two minutes of the restart.

Hossam Ghaly found space down the right flank and timed his cross to perfection, dropping it onto the right boot of Berbatov, who volleyed past a helpless Schwarzer from 25 yards.

Viduka saw a low drive deflected wide after 53 minutes, while Schwarzer was required to race from his goal and head clear to foil yet another Berbatov counter-attack.

Spurs came agonisingly close to a third in the 56th minute when Malbranque sent Keane clean through, but the Irishman knocked his shot inches wide under pressure from Schwarzer.

The home side finally fashioned a clear-cut chance in the 63rd minute when Viduka swivelled in the box and hit a rising shot which flashed over the bar.

And Boro narrowed the deficit in the 66th minute when Downing crossed from the right and Viduka rose above a static Spurs rearguard to head home his 16th goal of the season.

Incredibly, Boro could have been level within a minute when Boateng crossed for Viduka, whose effort from point-blank range was brilliantly saved by Robinson.

Suddenly the visitors found themselves turfed out of their comfort zone with Viduka forcing another good save out of Robinson in the 77th minute as Boro pressed.

Fabio Rochemback was unfortunate when his blazing 80th minute free-kick looked goal-bound until it struck Zokora and flashed behind.

But Spurs finished the job in the 83rd minute when substitute Lennon cut the ball back from the goal-line into the path of Keane, who fired into the roof of the net.

Pogatetz provided another potential late twist by heading home Downing's corner in the dying seconds but it was too late for Boro to salvage a point.
