A football club's anthem should be a song in which the fans truly believe. It is a song that can capture the club's history. It is a song that the fans can sing passionately and doesn't change from season to season. It's a song that we need at the Riverside. Join the campaign for a Boro anthem.
What is an Anthem?
A football club's anthem should be a song in which the fans truly believe. It is a song that can capture the history of a club in a few simple lines. It is a song that the fans can sing passionately and that doesn't change from season to season.
Managers may come and go, players may come and go, a club may face relegation, promotion, or even liquidation. But the
support is ongoing and an anthem reflects this.
Why do we need an Anthem?
We feel as fans that we need a song that we can pass down the generations, that sums up the way we feel about our club. We
need a song that we can belt out with pride and passion every week, and a song that gives us hope in dark times, and a song
we can sing with pride in the good times.
We've all heard people complaining about the lack of atmosphere at the Riverside since we moved there. Well this is our
chance to make a difference. It would create such an intimidating atmosphere at the Riverside and would also inspire the
players to achieve great things. Just look at the effect the Liverpool fans had upon their team. Could they have won without
them? Even though only two of the Liverpool team actually hail from Merseyside, they played like a team of scousers. Why? I
think it is because of those loyal fans belting out their anthems with such pride. You could suggest that certain players
don't play with any pride when wearing the Boro shirt. How could any player remain uninspired from 35,000 fans belting out
their anthem with passion and pride?
What made us pick "We Shall Overcome"?
We posted messages on Boro message boards asking what fans thought would make a suitable anthem for the club. The clear
winner was the old classic "We Shall Overcome".
This song was chosen, I feel, because it represents the hard times at the club, but also and more importantly the never say
die attitude of the fans. Playing this song could be the inspiration the players need to overcome that deficit, to progress
in Europe, to pick themselves up for the next match, and to win vital those matches.
So What Next?
We have made a petition supporting the choice of "We Shall Overcome" as our Club Anthem, so please add your name to the
ever-increasing list if you support this idea. When we feel we have enough signatures we shall send the petition to the club
and request they do everything they can to help us publicise the anthem and improve the match-day atmosphere. Our aim is to
get so many signatures that they sit up and take notice!
