Lee Hendrie returns to the Villa starting line-up and teenage midfielder Craig Gardner is in line for his first start for the Midlanders.

Villa midfielder Gavin McCann is suspended and colleague James Milner is ineligible as the terms of his loan deal do not allow him to play against Newcastle.

Newcastle manager Alan Shearer will make a late decision on whether to play midfielder Kieron Dyer who recovered from illness as soon as Graeme Souness was sacked.

Michael Owen, Steven Taylor and Stephen Carr are all out for Newcastle and although Craig Moore played for the reserves on Thursday, he is still not ready for first-team action.
