Coventry are set to make an audacious - and an almost certainly hopelessly ambitious - offer to British Lion Mike Phillips following his release from Top 14 outfit Bayonne.
Phillips, who has been capped 77 times by Wales and started the two Tests the Lions won against Australia in the summer, has had his contract cancelled for allegedly turning up to an analysis session under the influence of alcohol.
While the exact details are not yet clear, what is certain is that the scrum half has joined up with Warren Gatland’s squad ahead of the autumn internationals without anywhere to play in the two months between Tests against South Africa, Argentina, Tonga and the Wallabies and the Six Nations.
And that’s where Coventry head coach Scott Morgan senses the opportunity of a short link up as Coventry look for what would be a massive boost in their bid to win promotion from National One.
Morgan knows the 31-year-old having played with him at Cardiff between 2006-07 but he’s not the only, nor even the best, source of contact Coventry have.
“Barry Davies is best mates with Mike and they lived together for many years, he was even going over there to help him move back if he was needed,” Morgan revealed.
