Cliffie Hodgson wants points to mean prizes for Cov...

As he nears yet another record, Coventry points machine Cliffie Hodgson has spoken of his pride at his individual success but reiterated his determination to put the team’s needs above his own.

The South African-born full back scored all of Cov’s points in their 18-10 victory over Henley Hawks last weekend, a result that saw them capitalise on defeats to several of their promotion rivals.

With Rosslyn Park, Esher, Wharfedale and Fylde all slipping to surprise losses Cov’s victory, in their first match since Christmas, saw them rein in the top five and with a game in hand gave them a chance to gate-crash the top three.

And the metronomic boot of Hodgson has also put him in a position to write his name into club history following last year’s single-season points record of 316.

The former Rotherham man has 239 so far this term and needs just 17 more points to break Steve Gough’s league career record of 571 – in well under two seasons.

But while he will be hopeful of securing all of them when Cov face Blaydon this weekend he insists his own agenda will be secondary to that of head coach Scott Morgan’s.

“I had no idea about this record, it’s a great feeling but it is not what I set out to do,” Hodgson said. “I set my goals at the start of the season and if I reach them the performances and results tend to take care of themselves.
