Coventry have been handed a double boost in the second row with the arrival of South African lock Roan van Heerden and Tom Poole signing a two-year contract to remain at the National League One club.

Van Heerden, 29, has played Currie Cup and Vodacom Cup rugby for the Leopards and was introduced to the Butts Park Arena crowd during Saturday’s 22-10 win over Wharfedale, while Poole has been one of Cov’s most consistent performers this season in his second year since joining from junior club Kettering.

“We needed another second row for the rest of the season and Roan wants to get himself match fit for the South African season, so it seemed a good fit,” said Cov’s rugby director Phil Maynard.

“We’re delighted to have him here, and it’s great that Tom has committed his future to us – he has made a lot of progress over the last year and puts everything into his game.”
