Coventry Rugby statistical review season 2013/14.

As Coventry Rugby’s fourth season in National League 1 is completed, attached is a statistical comparison of the past four seasons. The following remarks are my personal analysis of some of the salient points revealed in these figures, although I would stress that these comments are purely my own and as always with statistics are open to different interpretations.

Overall the last season can be seen as an outstanding and record making one, living up to pre-season expectations.

Results:-

Highest ever league position third (or 4^th after confirmed points deduction), highest ever points scored (878), highest ever plus points difference (257), highest ever game points scored 95(or 90 after confirmed points deduction).

Highest ever average points scored per game up to 29, average points conceded per game at 21 matches lowest in last four seasons. Tries scored at 108 highest in 3 seasons.

Highest ever difference between tries scored and tries conceded (25).

Third best defensive record in league only beaten by Champions Doncaster Knights and runners up Rosslyn Park, highest ever number of wins (19),highest ever number of home wins (12) and away wins (7).Lowest ever number of home losses (3) and away losses (8).Record overall win success rate of 63% made up of home 80% and away 48%.

Highest number of wingers tries scored in past 3 seasons (32).

Highest number of winning doubles scored (7), with lowest number of losing doubles conceded (3).

Personal Records:--

Cliffie Hodgson is Coventry club’s new record points scorer with 372, also confirmed as the league’s top points and goal-kicker.

Attendances:-

After the previous season’s 20% decrease, this season’s figures  show a 40% increase on last season, with average attendances now up to 1198.There were 12 home attendances over 1000 and 2 over 1500 against Doncaster Knights and a record attendance of 1601 against Rosslyn Park. This suggests that our core following has increased by approximately 25%.

However average attendances in the higher league the Championship, is just under 2000 and already Coventry Rugby have higher attendances that Moseley and Ealing Tfs but there is still some way to go to match the majority of the teams there.

Summary:-

The key for a successful season is more consistency which has been better this season than last, but  still Coventry Rugby have  had some strange and unexpected defeats. Close home defeats by the top two didn’t help but such wins are required to pressurise such title contenders. The two title contenders Doncaster and Rosslyn Park have shown an overall winning success rate of 80% plus both home and away with the ability to win games from a losing position or even when playing poorly, this consistency is required to challenge for the title, which must be the main objective next season.. With the news that the majority of last season’s squad are expected to re-sign or be retained, this much needed continuity should also help, together with the introduction of a few more key signings.
