Four games into the new National League One season, rugby director Phil Maynard concedes that it is difficult at the moment to say that Coventry have made any significant progress.

Saturday’s 21-16 reversal at Blaydon leaves Cov with a record of two wins and two defeats from the opening month, and although they can point to an unexpectedly high injury list, it is not the start they were hoping for after a top four finish last term.

“On the evidence, you would have to say that as it stands we haven’t taken any steps forward,” said Maynard.

“We are two and two, we could have perhaps been four and nought, and there are mitigating circumstances, but it is disappointing.

“The view after last season was to cut down the size of the squad and up the quality, trying to build on what we did last year, but if you look at the pack we started with on Saturday, there were four new lads in there who have not been through the learning experience the others have as a group.

“It hasn’t helped having so many injuries, but we are what we are and we just have to roll up our sleeves and get on with it.

“We analysed Saturday’s game to death over the weekend, we will work on things at training, and we will be looking for a reaction against Wharfedale this weekend.

“We need to get consistency in our performances, but it is difficult when we have so many players out and we haven’t got the continuity.”
