Rugby director Phil Maynard refused to write-off Coventry’s promotion chances after a 20-17 defeat at Esher ended their 18-game unbeaten run in National League One.
But with Cov dropping down to third place in the table, he conceded that it would be difficult to make up the lost ground following another injury to George Oliver, who was the club’s only available open side flanker, and a possible suspension for Scott Morgan who was sent off along with Esher’s Neil Sweeney after a second-half flare-up.
“You have got to say never-say-never in this game and we now have to get ourselves sorted out for a crucial game next week which we have got to win,” said Maynard.
“But being realistic, we have to say that we’ve dropped some crucial points in the last few weeks which has been disappointing and has hurt our challenge for the league.
“We’ve got to look at one point down here as not really good enough if you are going to win a title, but it’s also about setting an agenda and it’s what we do next which is going to be key.”

It is unlikely that both ET and RP will slip up. But we have to make sure that if they do we are in a position to make progress.
I think if the season were to drift away now. It would undermine all the great achievements of the season.
