Roan van Heerden happy to pull a flanker for Coventry RFC

Second-row Roan van Heerden was happy to take a backward step to help Coventry’s cause at Esher last Saturday.

With back-row injures biting deep at Cov, the experienced 30-year-old South African was moved to blind side flanker – later admitting that it is really his favoured role.

“Most of my junior rugby was at 6 or 8, and when I went into senior rugby I had a couple of games at 6,” said van Heerden. “Mostly I’ve been at 4 or 5 because of the height thing, but I do prefer to play at 6.

“We’re just a bit short of back rowers at the moment and I’m quite happy to do that. I enjoy playing there – you have a lot more freedom than in the second row.

“Certain combinations are selected for certain reasons, different guys bring different things to the to the game, and for us it’s a case of trying to find the right mix again.”
