Maynard says Cov are in great shape ahead of promotion push.

Rugby director Phil Maynard is confident that Coventry are in a stronger position all-round than 12 months ago with the start of the National League One season just three weeks away.
Third last season, Cov have made no secret of their intention to mount a serious promotion challenge this time round and Maynard was impressed by the manner of their 50-7 victory at Cardiff last Saturday.
“It wasn’t the strongest Cardiff team I have seen, but from our own perspective it was very good,” said Maynard. “A lot of our systems and structural work was evident to see.
“Keeping the ball for ten, 15 phases at a time is what we’re looking to do, and we looked more committed in defence than last year which is something we have looked at closely. Our scramble defence was very good.
“Cardiff was a step up from the previous two weeks, and it will be no different over the next two weeks with tough games against London Welsh and Ealing Trailfinders which will be a real test for us.
“But I’m very encouraged. These weekends away are designed to get lads together and to spend time socially with each other, generating a spirit which we are going to need when we go to places like Blaydon and Wharfedale.”
