A damaging day at the office for Coventry whose title credentials are, on the evidence of this display, fast disappearing over the horizon.

The match statistics might suggest a close game – an even count of penalties conceded, scrums and line-outs won - and both sides made too many handling errors for their own comfort in a stop-start affair.

But, in truth, Cov were well off the mark in a performance which lacked structure, direction and ideas. At times it looked as if the team had just come together on the day.

Fylde only needed to be a little bit sharper in thought and deed than their hosts, bossing the breakdown area as Cov wilfully surrendered possession in the contact area, to secure a win which was made all the easier by Cov’s continuing indiscipline – experienced scrum-half Wayne Evans picking up a needless yellow card for preventing a quick penalty deep in Cov’s own half and then a second, becoming a red and which will lead to a suspension, right on the final whistle, for an apparent slap.
