George Oliver received the double accolade of Supporters’ Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year when Coventry presented their end-of-season awards after Saturday’s thrilling win over Ampthill.
The 23-year-old open-side flanker, who has made 42 appearances in his three seasons at the Butts Park Arena, was a popular choice for both, finishing ahead of Dom Lespierre and Matt Price who shared second place in the fans’ vote, and nearest challenger in the players’ poll, Ben Thomas.
“It’s a very proud achievement for me,” said Oliver, who has not been retained for next season. “But it’s a lot down to the place, to the people working for the team behind the scenes, and to the fans.
“They’re a passionate bunch and it’s been a privilege to play in front of them. There have been moments in games when they have made the difference – Plymouth at home earlier this season, Esher at home last season, when they really pulled us through and gave us that added kick. The 16th man.
“Saturday was an emotional one with a few boys leaving, and to sign off at home that way was what we wanted to do. We wanted to go and put our statement out, and now we’re looking forward to the final game at Wharfedale this Saturday and making sure the whole weekend is a great way to finish.”
