Coming and Going. To and Fro
By Kimbo
August 29 2020
WELL, it's been a long time since I added an update to this site - and truth told, I didn't expect to be doing so again, but I expect folk are missing it a bit, so here goes.
When I passed the site back to Russ, way back in March I was kinda snowed under with family issues, and it was getting to the point that I just wasn't going to have time to do it justice.
A lot has happened in the interim. My Father in Law passed away in April, just a couple of months short of his century, and then my stepfather went the same way a little while after that. Two 'lockdown' funerals ensued, and it has to be said, they were even less fun than than 'normal' time funerals. Minimal attendances allowed, and no wakes to follow either. Ashes still in boxes, awaiting the right time to do them justice in better times to come.
And hopefully, better times are to come for Coventry Rugby Football Club.
I'm sure most of us appreciate how tough it must be keeping the club going with little or no income, and it's good that most supporters are being exceptionally patient through what might have been received with far less understanding by some.
We still have some way to go before matches can be played at Butts Park Arena, and speculation as to when that might be currently ranges from November to 'well into the new year', and as to how many spectators will be allowed into the ground. Personally, I tend to err towards the latter restart timing scenario as being the more likely, but that remains to be seen.
A while back, we were presented with a list of players who have left the club for pastures new. It's fair to say that a good many of those (eighteen I believe) would not have been going anywhere but for this damned virus, but it is what it is, and it can be seen as a chance to reset and to modify the profile of the squad. Certainly the replacements that have been announced so far have helped to lower the average age of the squad, and certainly lower the running costs of the same.
And that's no bad thing at the moment. There's nothing to gain from attempting to front-up to the collective purchasing power of Saracens and Ealing, so biding time seems prudent. For now.
To Recap then;
Players leaving:
Gibbons (ETF), Russell (Hartpury), Flinn (Hartpury), Halaifonua (Scottish), Adams (Cambridge), Langley (Moseley), Wallace (Leicester), Kessell (Bristol), Stevens (Retiring), Ellis, Tolmie, Dawidiuk, Denman, Voss, Oram, Ram, Trimble, J. Bulumakau.
There's a lot of top- and second-level experience there, and a lot of associated cost no doubt. It'll take some replacing.
Players Retained
Brown (FB), Owen (C), A. Bulumakau (W), Forsyth (C), Knox (C), Fenner (FH), Jennings (FH), Lewis (FH), White (SH), Peters (Captain, BR), Burrows (BR), Nayalo (BR), Nutley (BR), Dacres (L), Woolford (L), Buckle (H), Boulton (TH), Jeannot (TH).
Players Incoming
Toby Trinder (LH, Northampton, 17/7/20), Rob Stevenson (W, Scottish, 27/7/20), Alex Gibson (TH, Hartpury, 25/8/20), Keston Lines (LH, Leicester, 25/8/20)
Players Promoted from Devt. Squad
Sam McNulty (H), Kailus Hutchinson (L), James Martin (W).
I make that a First Team Squad of 25, with a lot of talent throughout, if a little light in a few areas - all of which will be addressed in the fullness of time no doubt.
It's too early to make any predictions as to how the season is going to pan out, but a comfortable mid-table finish beckons I think.

We're generally a patient bunch of supporters but this is always the best forum for hearing any snippets of news.
Sorry to hear about your loss. These have been strange and difficult times. Glad you have remained positive and thanks for your time and effort with the article.
You are great to get this popular site back up and running - my thanks to you for doing so.
We now have a clear understanding of who has signed so far for the coming season and no doubt there will be additions as and when Roland is ready to announce them
We will all need to be extra patient though!
Given that it provides a lifeline as a dynamic forum for messages, exchanges of views, the provision of updates, requests for help and assistance in whatever form, general banter between supporters, etc, etc, it's a puzzle as to why it was allowed to go down and, without Kimbo's intervention, it would probably still be down.
There seems too, to have been little transfer of anything from the Unofficial Coventry Rugby Twitter account, or any story posts, in the last several months, so it's not entirely surprising that it became moribund and we supporters had to witness its demise.
All of which would appear to beg the question as to whether it needs a moderator who has the time to be able to keep on top of it?
The reason that there have been no transfers of information from other sources is exactly the same. News items have to be copied across by the manager of the site.
More concerning is what has happened to Russ? Has he just lost interest, has he been away on holiday, or are there other reasons that he has made no updates to the site in the past few months? We don't need to be told specifics, but is there anyone who can confirm he is OK?

If Russ has been unable or unwilling to update the site then that's obviously up to him but, being an old mucker of mine, I'd hope he's keeping ok in these strange times...

Being an old mucker, is there any chance of you checking he's OK?
Old is the key word Kimbo - school mates from 40 odd years ago - my only contact now is when we occasionally bump into each other...
If you’re out there Russ perhaps you could put our minds at ease?
I’m not a first responder or anything as brave as that, these days I work in the rather less dramatic world of financial data/modelling. Suffice to say no one quite saw this coming, so I’ve been a bit busy sorting things out data-wise. It’s really not as exciting as it sounds.
Thank you for the kind thoughts though, it’s nice to be missed!
I’d noticed the site was down a few days ago, which probably shows how often I’ve been here recently. I was actually tempted to call Sports Network’s bluff by refusing to update it and telling them so - they’ve then got the choice to lose all advertising by dropping a ridiculously unfair update rule, or keep some interest in the site by letting the message board stay up regardless.
However I’ve not had the chance to do that either, and Kimbo beat me to it by adding content. I still think their argument is patently rubbish though, and I’m still of the opinion that we should move away from here rather than have them demand fresh news content every two weeks to satisfy an arbitrary requirement.
Anyway, regardless of all of that, I hope everyone is well. I’m going to miss a few of those players, especially big George Oram who never failed to put in a full shift and then some...
Cheers,
Russ.
Obviously the site has missed the almost day-to-day management which it needs in order to meet the demands of Sportsnetwork and it’s perhaps a bit unfortunate that you hadn’t noticed that it was down until “a few days ago” whereas, in fact, it actually went down some considerable time before that.
Given that the demands on your time with work and family leave you with restricted opportunity to manage the site, is it worth considering whether Kimbo, in his retirement and his willingness to take the responsibility on board, may be in a better position to take over from you?
You’ll appreciate that I have no axe to grind here and do not wish to embroil myself in the responsibilities which come with the site management, but could it be, in the circumstances, to your advantage (and possible relief) to relinquish the role.
It’s my impression that supporters are not favourably inclined towards the idea of a move away from the site to an alternative, so could this be a further incentive for you to let someone else take the responsibility?
I've mentioned it before, both on here and on the Sportnetwork internal 'Publishers' forum, but I'll say it again.
There's no way that SN are totally impartial in their shut-down policy. A good few months ago (when I was still running this site) I got the right hump when they shut us down after 14 days without an update. Fine, you may say; them's the rules.
And I agree.
It's no excuse that I was away in a field somewhere with no laptop and very little internet access. That's my problem. I accept that. I was one day late though.
What really boiled my pish, however, was that several other sites had not updated at all for many weeks - months even.
Where was their sanction? Fair? Demonstrably not.
Just out of curiosity, I had a quick survey of the SN rugby sites earlier this evening.
I noted that Plymouth's site had disappeared (they haven't updated since late July, so it's to be expected).
However, of the others, Both Bedford and PzN appear to be well past their two weeks (approx 2.5 months and 11 months respectively).
Even in the rarified Promised Land, there are sites past their update limit (Wasps, Sale, Quins, Cardiff, to various degrees).
Like I said; it's the inconsistency.
No response the second time
The first time, they responded by saying they would 'look at the policy'. That patently didn't happen.
Nothing changes there, and I see nothing that will make it change, frankly.
1: They manage the infrastructure.
They run a site fo lots of teams, and unless / until they give up it's not our problem.
If we change moderator here, SN carries on and our site carries on.
If a moderator vanishes here its a temporary inconvenience to get a new one set up.
The club hasno interest in running an unofficial foru, neiter does the supporters' association. If the moderator had to run a forum as well as occasionally intervening, and regularly adding news items, we would get through a lot more moderators, a lot more quickly.
When moderators change, the ite URL doesn't. If the moderators also ran the infratructure a change in moderator would oftenmean a new site ata new URL.
2: It's free.
Or rather, it's paid for by advertisements that the moderator doesn't have to manage.
To fund a forum hosting, either by advertisements or by periodic appeals is another task that the moderator doesnlt have to touch. Give that job (either version to a moderator, and again the frequency of change would increase.
3: It's where a lot of other clubs have forums.
People can find us. Pretty well every club that has moved away from SN,nd the supporters have set up their own forum, the replacement has lasted less than a season.
[coventryrfc.proboards.com]
I’ve used pro boards for at least seven years on different forums without any issues, fwiw, so have no reason to fear their longevity. It’s free both to set up and to use.
I’m also more than happy for anyone to jump in and start creating content on here, but as above I’ve been a bit busy to do so.
The reason we churn through admins and this becomes an issue is it becomes a bit of a chore both creating new content and working through SN’s painful, rickety content management system. SN obviously rely on inertia from users who don’t wish to move away, and goodwill and free time from admins who jump through their hoops to keep the site up.
Complaining to SN is a waste of time, I’ve done it, Kimbo’s done it, other site admins have done it, all to zero effect. What might make them listen is letting the board shut down for a while, and then they might see how farcical their stance is.
I get that for some of you that’s not something you’d like, but unless we do the message board is always at the risk of being shut down when I’m (or any new or current admin) is busy.
I’m at the point where I don’t really want to play their game, and even if I did I haven’t got enough time some weeks to do so. I’m happy to pass admin duties on or to at least share the responsibility (although I think the better choice actually is to bite the bullet and move onto a platform that’s better designed and less susceptible to the whims of SN).
Any volunteers?
Biggest is that the clubs accounts have now been lodged and to June 19, we are showing a £2.8million loss in the profit and loss account and a 1.2 million loss for the year to June 19.
Of course, we now have the current year to add to that ie: to June 2020 and clearly this will add on another million or so.
Accordingly, we are so insolvent it seems that we simply will not be around when the season begins.
Whenever that might be.
Add to that the RFUhave cut funding by 50% down to £250k and referees will take most of that.
It is published that a P Ross Borough and J Maguire and a guy from Bedworth are directors and are owed money.
Will Maguire make more loans to us.
It is said he was the "Alickadoo" promoter back in the 98,bankruptcy.
Hopefully, poor old John Sharpe will not get investor fatigue, although selling jet engine finance/leasing cannot be very busy just now for obvious reasons.
Looks all over for us with the current owner and board who already have had a crowd funding to pay local suppliers.
We need big money investors with no hope of promotion in future as ring fencing is surely the end game.

Yes, problems all round.

Cheers Telly1 for gatecrashing a thread with positivity. If only your input had brought a few things we aren't all aware of already. Re crowd funding - numerous clubs have done it in these difficult times. I am sure you chipped in, so well done, thanks for your continued support.

it's Jon Sharp!!! For crying out loud.....
As a result, I don’t respond. Which is the best way to deal with such a d*ckhead.
Maybe you could come up with some constructive comments and money making ideas after you have furnished us with the facts that you promise us.
Telly1, I’m done with warning you. I don’t have enough time to monitor the board for libel, so later on I’ll be removing your access to post under that user name.
Quote:Any bets on his new user name?CharlieBravo
Well done Russ. I would have thought the vast majority of users of this board would support you. It’s just unfortunate that your responsibilities have to go so far as this, because you could do without it.

Any bets on his new user name?
Tellytubby?
Or not.
However, not for the first time, he went from stating an opinion to positing as fact a suggestion of illegal conduct. That’s just not on, I’m afraid.
Let’s not lower ourselves to personal attacks, please. For all I know Telly is a thoroughly decent chap with a love of the club, but who can’t work within the required boundaries of debate here. I wish him no ill will.
If he appears under a different guise but posts within the rules, I won’t need to do anything further, I guess.
Russ...
