Not so Bonny, Donny?

FOR ten minutes, it looked for all the world that Cov had decided to take a day off.
Within that ten minutes the visitors had pinned Cov back in their own half, potting a long-range penalty and adding a converted try following an offside penalty from a Fenner cross-field kick for a comfortable ten-nil lead.
And Cov were lucky to have scored zero.
Such was the gulf between the sides at that point. Doncaster looked like a side that had been expensively assembled and intended to justify the hype around them and push Ealing all the way to the Premiership dream. Cov looked like three-quarters of the squad hadn't even shaken hands.
Things really didn't improve much for the next twenty minutes either, and without taking statistical notes, it seemed to me that the home side didn't trouble the visitors' 22 for the first half hour (ish) of the game. However, that first visit was worth waiting for, with pressure in the left corner eventually resulting in a touchdown for Nile Dacres, further improved by Fenner.
The out-half further made amends for an earlier rash kick through that had gone dead from all of 60 metres by hoofing a penalty from near halfway to send the Blue & Whites into the break at an, at times, unlikely 10-10.
I have absolutely no idea what Rowland Winter slipped into the half-time teapot, but whatever it was I hope he keeps it to himself.
Cov came out looking like a team on a mission, pressing high and constantly, with Man of the Match Ryan Burrows making a superb trademark break which unfortunately came to naught.
Perversely it was Doncaster who were to reinstate their lead, completely against the run of play, to make it 10-17.
Cov weren't going to lie down though, and within five minutes Adam Peters pulled it back to 15-17, with replacement out-half Tom Curtis (for the injured Tony Fenner) eschewing the relatively simple conversion. He'd make up for it with interest though as the half progressed.
And it didn't take long as he potted a superb touchline two-pointer following a wonderful team try, brilliantly finished in the water tank corner in Bulumakau-esque style by Josh Bainbridge. Again Burrows featured prominently with a huge burst from nowhere leaving the visitors' defence in tatters. MoM just about sealed right there.
It continued to be all Cov, and that pressure eventually resulted in a top-drawer try for Curtis, which he duly topped-up to put Cov almost out of sight at 29-17.
Buzz wasn't finished though, and sealed his bubbly with a try which was also converted by Curtis for 36-17.
Donny had time to bag their third try in stoppage time - there'd been quite a few of those – but Curtis wasn't going to turn down a final chance to add to his tally, and with the last touch of the game did just that with a perfectly weighted long-distance penalty to seal things at 39-22.
A very satisfying start then for a rather patched-up Cov squad. Five points that not many outside of the club's orbit thought would be theirs.
It's always fun to confound the 'pundits'.
Coventry 5-0 Doncaster
It would be remiss of me to omit to mention the props. I had my doubts about the replacements - before their addition to their field of play. When both Trinder and Boulton left and were replaced by Richardson and Jones, if anything the pack improved, and so I apologise unreservedly to both these gentleman. It's so good to see that Luc Jeannot's injury hasn't adversely impinged on the set piece. Haste you back though Luc! (When ready...).
Oh, and a word for Ma'am too (no idea what the correct term is, but it's probably not 'Sir' in this case). Sarah Cox had, in my opinion, a superb match, allowing the game to flow where possible, and communicating her requirements extremely clearly. More of this, please.

Our lineout looked a whole lot better with the new lock too in the last 30 or so.

I did feel that Donny slowed the game down at every opportunity, pace was going to be Cov’s best weapon and eventually it paid off. I thought Ryan Burrows was immense and a deserving MoM. All in all, I felt Cov took away more positives. After a sticky start, groans to the fore early on in the stand, the line-out improved as Cov went on. When , as has been previously mentioned he was introduced, I thought Jonathan Kpoku had his best showing so far. All of the players deserve credit for showing grit (Cov Dog?) but Tom Curtis, on for the felled Tony Fenner, showed promise.
As you stated Steve, Sarah Cox had a very good game, don’t think she was helped by her assistants. If , as has been stated , the officials are going to be travelling in groups this year, Sarah needs to put in a transfer request!
It’s just my opinion, but I would be surprised if there were no citings to come, for the late challenge on Tony Fenner , forcing his withdrawal and the blatant use of a elbow lead at a ruck late in the second half. We shall see.
All in all, enjoyed the end result and the second half momentum. If the winning continues , the attendances will start to rise.
We have quietly assembled a very good squad but the fixture list is full of tough games and banana skins. So one hurdle at a time.
Everytime I have seen Sarah Cox officiate she has had a good game in my book. We never agree fully with a ref but she gets more right than wrong. A big plus for me is her clear hand signals so at least you know what decision she has made even if you disagree.
Donny were always gonna come hard out of the blocks, we didn't.
Good win though 😅
It didn’t ‘feel’ like that, perhaps the sunshine meaning people were around the ground thinned it out? Still, it’s a good bench mark

Apparently over 2000 yesterday?

Disappointingly low, but it'll improve.

I’m basing it on what Chris said in the RW interview after the game.
Cheers Paul
I guess the more casual rugby fans have had three home games before this to chose from to see some rugby, and paying full whack for the friendlies might have meant they decided to give yesterday a miss.

I know I should direct this query to the club but is the ‘red zone’ area on the Broomfield side here to stay? It takes up a decent chunk of the that side and obviously no access along the front makes life slightly more difficult for moving around.
Plus, players standing pitch-side obscure the view of the pitch.

Not sure about the red zone bit question, tbh, but I guess as restrictions relax, that will come.

Players shouldn't be obscuring anyone's view (unless they're warming up).

Hi , just thought I would try and answer the above if I can. The ‘ red zone ‘ requirement, I believe, is a current RFU request which is, as I understand , to be reviewed in the middle of next month. It has obviously caused some issues in the recent games and upset a few people. Probably the main beneficiaries at the moment are the Old Dyers and the Broomfield, people going there post-match for an after game drink.
Regarding Egg Tigers’s comments, certainly there is an undercurrent of COVID wariness at play. A case in point is CRSC’s coach to Ampthill on Saturday. A couple of regular travellers are making their own way there, rather than by coach. I can understand this. Normally there would be a full coach to what is probably our nearest away fixture. This coach will probably lose money but will still go as we are committed to run it. Hopefully, if the team will go on a winning run, the desire to travel will return.
All I can say is people are working very hard to keep the club , CRSC, working on our members behalf, and non-members also. It is not all doom and gloom. I think we have the basis of a squad that could
have a very good season and do well. As regards the attendance numbers, I am sure we would like more to attend but it is also worth noting that the BPA had the sixth largest English gate at the weekend. All clubs seem to have to reclaim the ‘floating support.’
Let us hope it never comes to that.
Means we can use the whole stand for paying supporters
Hopefully that will be addressed in the next year or so.
Yes, there is a large chunk unavailable at the mo, and it annoyed me sufficiently to encourage me to move over to the east side and take up my seat for the second half.
And then the sun was too low 😂
The club can't win, can it? 😉

Maybe a case of informing away teams to stay in their sheds unless warming up

I think there's more to it than just that, to be honest. I think drinking out of plastic cups doesn't go down too well with some, cashless stadium makes it difficult for others, still some Covid fears out there and having to walk 3/4 of the way round the ground to avoid the red zone p's some off, double sold tickets, missing rows of seats (which have tickets sold for them) all play a part.
The seating issues have been sorted out as much as has been possible

First league game v a big rival (for league position anyway), the 1823 attendance mentioned on Twitter after the match does seem a bit disappointing. With no Wasps playing and CCFC away aswell.

What was interesting last week was that there were a grand total of 2 tickets which were sold with the ‘season members bring a friend’ discount, with the codes sent out midweek. Ultimately one of the best ways to increase the size of the crowd is for supporters to introduce a match day to a friend who’s not been here before, and all being well they enjoy themselves so much they want to come back.
I appreciate that 4 days ahead of time may be too late for some, but it’s based on having the vast majority of our match by match sales being made in the last 4 days before the relevant fixture.
These codes remain the same all season, so hopefully you can encourage more Members to use them!

When were the codes sent out? I don't appear to have received them.

Me neither, checked all my boxes but only received a match day hospitality email on Wednesday.

Found it, in my promotions inbox on the 12th. Now I need to find out how to ensure emails from the club go into my Primary inbox, some do - some obviously don't...
I'll drop Jo a mail and let you know how it goes.
Hi Kimbo,
Im not sure what went out tbh, emails go out from another source but I can let you know that I will be taking care of these and monitoring them.
You can call or email me the games you would like to redeem the tickets on and I will send the e-tickets to your email address direct from the ticketing system. Hope that helps? 😊
Looks like it's in hand now.
Coventry v Doncaster.

Is this thread covering two subjects? The 10% code for introducing a friend - what Chris is referring to - and the 4 match tickets in lieu of those missed due to Covid - the latter appears to be what Jo is referring to.

It appears to be covering three.
Coventry v Doncaster.
I think the original topic got lost in the ether...
