And a frosty preceding week made for some speculation as to whether there would be weather-postponements around the leagues.

However, barring a catastrophic freeze-up of the BPA's synthetic pitch's watering system, this was always going to be unlikely in CV1. And indeed, proved to be the case.

The round got under way at Lady Bay on Friday evening, with an in-form Nottingham entertaining still-settling-in Cambridge. And it proved to be a lively start, with both sides chipping in three tries in the first half, with Cambridge just shading it with an extra two-pointer. The newcomers might have held on for a draw had they potted a late penalty, but chose to go for the five-pointer, and duly missed out. Nottingham held on for a 22-19 bonus point victory which moved them into second place for the time being.

Saturday's Caldy vs Bedford fixture, however, did fall victim to the weather - at a very late stage - no doubt to the great displeasure of the travelling Blues fans.

Bottom side London Scottish, for all their detractors, made absolute mincemeat of the so-called form book at Richmond Athletic Ground, seeing off the millionaires of Ealing with a 19-17 win that sent shockwaves around the league and lifted them above Cambridge. Late tries in each half gave the west-Londoners the lead in each half - which they duly hung on to at the final whistle.

Who said it was a foregone conclusion this season? It's just a pity a few more didn't turn up to witness it.

Cov, seemingly a shadow of the side that took Doncaster apart so recently, were convincingly beaten by the travelling Gloucestershire Hartpury side.

There can be no excuses, but there absolutely must be some deep soul-searching done during the upcoming week, as all concerned will know this result, 29-47, and in particular the second half, were totally unacceptable.

Finally, the weekend was rounded up when Doncaster made the long trip to The Duchy to take on Cornish Pirates.

They didn't appear to be suffering too much of a hangover from their previous away trip, taking the full points haul in a 28-39 win with the hosts gaining the bonus point late in the game.
