Two of our insiders at the Bescot have told us that Walsall striker Gary Birch was on the brink of a move to Kidderminster Harriers before Colin Lee changed his mind at the last minute.

Back in August it seemed that Gary Birch was going to mount a serious challenge for a starting place, but he has quickly slipped down the pecking order and his days at Walsall have looked numbered since December. Our two sources at the club have informed us that Birch had agreed terms with the Division 3 outfit, but Colin Lee decided not to let him leave because of his current selection problems. According to our sources, Lee's change of heart came about because he wants Birch to act as a stand by center half while Roper is suspended and Hay and Carbon struggle with injuries. Although the current situation has led to this deal breaking down, it seems certain that Birch will be on his way out of the Bescot Stadium before next Season, with Walsall wanting to boost their forward options with a player who can score regulary in the first division.
