The
French included established internationals such as Thuram, Desailly,
Lizarazu, Giuly and Henry, and gave fringe first XI players such as
Landreau, Mexes, Kapo and Pedretti a run out.
It
was always obvious who was going to take the points in this international
mismatch, and the French were 1-0 up after just 16 minutes thanks to
Oliver Kapo. Thierry Henry doubled their lead just minutes later and their
seemed no way back for the Kiwis.
The Kiwis did well to keep a relatively
strong French side at bay until 20 minutes from time when Kapo's team mate
at Auxere - Cisse netted the third goal of the game.
Hays
involvement in the game finished on 81 minutes, and Giuly and Pires got
two goals deep in to injury time to end the game 5-0.
The
final two goals came in injury time courtesy of Giuly and Pires. By this
time Hay had gone off, and had been replaced by Scott Smith with just 10
minutes left to play.
It
was certainly a tough night for Hay who had to contend with Henry and
Cisse, who combine to form one of World Footballs fastest and most lethal
forward lines.
The Kiwis
are now out of the tournament finishing bottom of group A.
