Could Walsall be about to make their biggest signing of their 115 year history? Reports are suggesting we are the favourites to secure the signature of the former England International.

The Saddlers are involved in the race to secure the signature of Paul Merson. The player is based in Sutton Coldfield, and is keen on a return to the Midlands.

West Brom boss Gary Megson is said to have ruled out any kind of bid for Merson, and the player has given Walsall boss Colin Lee a come and get me plea.

The media believe Merson is on about £10,000 a week at Fratton Park, something that he wont get should he move to the Bescot Stadium.

Lee as usual refused to comment on any possible targets, saying....

"i cant comment on any players or speculation surrounding us at the moment"

Their is no doubting the arrival of Merson would give the whole Club a boost. However, he still has 12 months left on his contract with Pompey, and some kind of deal would have to be thrashed out between the two sides.

Will other Division 1 clubs in the Midlands now show an interest?

Has this come out all to quickly?
