As soon as the final whistle blew at The Bescot Stadium on Saturday it was impossible to miss the score-line, no matter where you was in the world. Having missed the game due to a trip to Madrid, it took me only 30 minutes after full time to find out the result.

Having only 3 English speaking channels to choose from in the hotel room I decided to watch CNN International. They had just started a sports broadcast showing baseball highlights and results. Once this had finished they began to show soccer news, which involved David Beckham (just for a change).

I was shocked when this was followed by English Division 1 news, which was about Walsall's emphatic demolition of ex-premiership team West Brom. A picture of Paul Merson and details of the goal scorers accompanied the story. Only 2 other results were shown, but none were publicised in the same way.

The following day the Spanish editions of the English papers were released and Walsall and Paul Merson were splashed all across them. Front-page snippets and back page spreads.

It was an unbelievable experience to see the Saddlers being advertised so much, but it made me feel very proud to be a red!
