Steve Staunton has said his move to Coventry came off because of his friendship with Gary Mac. Although we have been unlucky this time around, it is encouraging to see us trying to sign players of his quality.

Steve Staunton has told the E&S he was very close to joining the Saddlers. Lee did approach the former Villa and Liverpool man, as the Saddlers desperately need a left sided center half.

Staunton revealed " I chose Coventry because i felt they were ambitious, and hopefully their new stadium will come off. I know Gary very well and i know what his thoughts on the game are and they similar to my own."

Colin Lee said he had done everything he could to lure the player to the Bescot, but with Coventry being the "bigger" club, it is hardly surprising he chose them over us. However, we can take heart from the fact players of his caliber are willing to consider a move to a club like Walsall.

Lee also went on to tell the E&S that everyone he has brought in so far this season has fell within his budget, which is about £1m less than he had last year.
