Paul Merson spent a night in police cells after being arrested on suspicion of assaulting his wife, it has been reported. The Daily Mirror says the 35-year-old former England and Arsenal midfielder was detained after his wife Louise called for help.
Sky Sports News report that Merson was taken to a police station near his home in Sutton Coldfield on Sunday night.
He was released the following day.
West Midlands Police confirmed that a man of 35 had been arrested but declined to give further details.
Louise, 33, is Merson's second wife and the mother of his twin 22-month-old daughters.
She said: "There's all sorts of things gone on that I'm sure some people would love to know about.
"But it's nothing to do with anyone else.
"I'm not going to say anything and certainly Paul isn't going to utter a word.
"We have our own problems like anyone else and we're dealing with them. We're still together."
Merson is a self-confessed alcoholic. He has also admitted to drug and gambling addictions in the past.
It is unknown what action the Saddlers will be taking but rumours have started that a meeting is being held today with view to suspending Merson until the police are happy that their investigations are complete.
If found guilty then Merson may end up being kicked out in order to protect the image of the club.
More developments and stories will follow in the coming days so keep checking back for all the latest.
