Michalis Vlachos began his
career with AEK Athens. He made well over 100 appearances for the Greek
giants before signing for Portsmouth on loan.
While with AEK he had a
regular diet of European Football and regularly lined up against the likes of
Real Madrid and Barcelona in European competitions.
He impressed at Pompey and
was given a permanent deal in 1998. A two year spell saw Vlachos
alternating between midfield and defence, making 55 appearances.
A lack of first team opportunities
in 2000 led to a free transfer to Walsall.
The Saddlers were fighting
for survival at the foot of the first division and the giant Vlachos had all
the qualities a struggling side needed.
He was a tough tackling
player with the right attitude. He was the ball winner our midfield had needed
, but his efforts were in vein as the Saddlers were
relegated.
He made his debut against
Pompey, in a game we lost 5-1. He featured 12 times before the end of
the season, scoring in a 4-2 defeat against Charlton in front of the Sky
TV Cameras.
His last game
was against Ipswich, as our relegation to the 2nd Division was
confirmed.
Michalis signed for Ionikos
(Greece), where he spent two seasons before moving to Cypriot club Appolon.
