Paul Merson is targeting Wimbledon defender Mark Williams as his replacement for Paul Ritchie, following in the footsteps of Colin Lee, who tried to get the player last year.

The Evening Mail have broken the story that Paul Merson sees Wimbledon defender Mark Williams as the answer to his "left sided" problem.

Merson has been quoted as saying he has always been an admirer of the Northern Ireland International, capped over 20 times by his country, and thinks he will be able to fill the hole left by the departure of player of the season, Paul Ritchie.

Colin Lee had taken a long hard look at Williams last season, but wasn't able to come to a deal with the centre back, who went on to join Wimbledon instead.

Meanwhile, Merson is locked in talks with Darren Bazeley about a new deal. Bazeley has received an offer to play in New Zealand.
