Saddlers Are Flying High

Does this up turn in form give us hope for next seasons promotion challenge or is it simply a case of too little too late? If we are to challenge the top of the league next term we need to keep hold of Joachim.

With the season fast coming to an end Saddlers have finally moved up a few gears and slipped into cruise control.

The forthcoming victory over clueless Stockport will make it five victories on the trot. It is obviously fantastic to finish the season on a high note but, it would have been much more beneficial if we had played in this manner from the season’s start.

Merson’s loan signings are partly responsible for this up turn in fortunes. Joachim is probably the biggest reason for our sudden surge up the table. It is his class that enables Merson’s new found 541 formation work. If Leitao was employed in this role we would certainly be far less effective.

So, should we be looking forward to a good season next term?

I still have this nagging doubt. Although we have gone on this victory surge I can’t help but offer mitigating circumstances. The unexpected victory over Swindon was probably aided by the fact the Swindon players hadn’t been paid due to a short term cash flow problem. Plus it was blowing a mighty gale.

The victory over Posh was down to the fact they were absolutely cack. This was then followed up by the third victory over already promoted Hull City whose minds were obviously elsewhere.

Last Saturdays win was probably the most unexpected but Hartlepool had an inexplicable stinker.

However, you can only beat the opposition that’s put in front of you.

If Merson can keep hold of Joachim and add a little more quality then there is a glimmer of hope that we could be flying high next season.
