We look at the reaction to Steve Staunton being named manager of the Republic of Ireland. What are people in the game saying...?

 

^{Former Ireland boss Mick Mcarthy has backed Staunton, saying ""What Steve lacks a bit in management then I am sure he has got the perfect man to help him," added McCarthy"} 

 

^{Eire Legend Niall Quinn has also leant his support to Stan by saying "The right decision has been made...though it may take time for all the dissenting voices to be drowned out" He seemed confident about the new set up, adding that "We will have a management team in place to revive the Irish side's fortunes"}

 

^{One man who knows exactly what Staunton can expect is Mark Hughes. The Blackburn boss has promised Staunton ""a real education" saying that he'd like to wish him  " all the very best because it is a very difficult job, one that can be very rewarding and very frustrating in equal measure"}

 

^{Closer to home, Walsall Chief Executive Roy Whalley has had his say... "He obviously made a great contribution to the Republic of Ireland team as a player, and I'm sure he will do the same as manager."}

 

^{Ronnie Whealen a former team mate of Staunton ""I can't help thinking it might have been better for Sir Bobby to take charge first and Stan to work as his assistant."}

 

^{Sir Bobby Robson, who will take up the role of International Advisor is "really looking forward to working with the new manager and his team"}

 

^{Some of the Irish Fans aren't that happy. When you consider that names like Martin O'Neil, Alex Ferguson and Terry Venebles were first banding about then it's clear to see why. One Irish Newspaper even carried the headline "Another fine mess", playing off the "Stan" Laurel nick name given to Staunton at the start of his career.}
