Can McGhee survive the latest Aberdeen debacle?

Dons Boss Mark McGhee has been under pressure for much of this season, and this was only increased with a humbling at Celtic Park this afternoon.

Dons fans chased out Jimmy Calderwood at the end of season 2008/09 and then started to clamour for playing Legend Mark McGhee who had steered Motherwell to a third place finish in his first season, and two European qualifications.

Since then the Dons have slipped further down the table, currently sitting ninth this season only two points off the bottom of the table. This is exactly the same position they finished last season, ten points off the bottom at the end of the season. In his last season Calderwood had the Pittodrie side as high as fourth in the table!

Despite steering Aberdeen into a League Cup semi final McGhee has only won 13 out of 49 League games, and for the fans in Aberdeen brought up on trophy success under Alex Ferguson back in the 1980s this is note good enough.

His comments after today’s game also left many of them disgusted with his lack of hurt after the defeat. He said, "I want to be the manager of Aberdeen Football Club. I have a little group of players here that can do okay. It went horribly wrong today but it doesn't change my opinion of that and as long as I'm the manager I will go out for the next game and then the next game until someone tells me different.

"I know what the board and chairman were thinking before this game and I have no idea if that result changes their opinion. I have been doing this a long time and it was only one game, as horrible as it was. It is only three points.

"It was a freakish result. Not in the sense that Celtic deserved to batter us but freakish in the sense that it was the first time in my career that I've ever lost by anything like this.

"But I have got to imagine that I am going to be the manager of Aberdeen on Tuesday night against Inverness and I have to prepare my team. I will be in tomorrow morning training and I have to go through that door in the morning and give them a message and give them a story that they will believe will take them out on Tuesday night and win a football match.

"I will go up the road, lie in the dark and stare at the ceiling and then get up in the morning and go down there and make it work."

They now have to take on Inverness at home on Tuesday, a side who have not lost away from home in almost a year, and then face a trip to Ibrox next week. This could be a massive week for McGhee and one that could dictate his short term future.
