Scotland win against Faroe Islands

Three first half goals were enough to see Scotland to victory in their friendly with the Faroe Islands at Aberdeen tonight.

There was an early shock for the make shift Scotland side when visiting striker Jann Ingi Petersen crashed a free-kick against Craig Gordon's crossbar form 35 yards after only 8 minutes.

Nerves were settled after in 24 minutes with Liverpool's Danny Wilson scoring on his debut as he volleyed home a corner from Charlie Adam which caught the visiting defence flat footed.

This gave the young Scots a lift and they were starting to knock the ball about really well but found some stiff resistance from a backs to the wall defence. The second goal did come on the half hour mark when an Adam corner was cleard back to him on the right flank and his next cross was turned in at close range by Chris Commons.

Aston Villa's Barry Bannan hit the post with a long range effort before Jamie Mackie latched on to a header across goal from Wilson to make it three before the break.

There were second half chances for Crainey, Maloney and Bannan but none could find the back of the net, and with the game won made the usual raft of substitutions that spoiled the flow of the game.

After the game the manager said, "I saw some performances tonight that gave me encouragement. Winning was the most important thing. Danny Wilson scored a great goal, Bannan played well. It was pleasing; after the opening 15 minutes we settled down. I think the supporters appreciated the players' efforts. I hope the cynics will agree that it was worthwhile."

As one of the cynics I will wait to see what happens in the future, we have seen so many youngsters given debuts in the past and they go on to be one cap wonders. Hopefully this won't happen to the likes of Bannan and Wilson but only time will tell.

Levein has probably now committed himself to taking the bulk of them to the Celtic Cup in Ireland!
