What is happening at Accies?

Rooted at the bottom of the SPL and two coaches leaving in mid-week, just what is happening at Hamilton Accies?

Accies are one of the great success stories of Scottish football in recent seasons, with a ten year trek from the third tier of the Scottish League to the top tier, while producing some top talent through their youth ranks.

This season they have struggled to re-capture the form that has kept them in the SPL for the last two seasons. Is it down entirely to the loss of quality players every season, with James McArthur and James MaCarthy having moved to Wigan and Brian Easton to Burnley, or is there more to it?

It would appear the loss of these players has played a big part in any poor run this season, particularly when many of the rest of the side, particularly in defence, are aging at the same time. It also shows teams can hit a rich seam of talent in their youth programme but it has to be produced constantly.

It also has to be sold at the right time for both the player and the team, and maybe Accies could learn from their Lanarkshire neighbours, Motherwell, who only let players go when they have someone ready to replace them.

Accies have also had troubles behind the scenes, and have struggled to find an Assistant Manager in recent times with John McCormack not lasting long and now Stuart Taylor and Andy Millen leaving in mid-week.

Has Billy Reid now taken them as far as he can, and will he now be able to find a stroke of luck and move to Aberdeen to replace Mark McGhee, after turning down the Swansea job in the close season?

This may be the right time for Reid to move on, Aberdeen are definitely a bigger club than the Accies and could raise Reid’s stock even further. The manager also needs to consider would relegation with Accies see his stock fall and make it harder to find that big move he undoubtedly deserves.
