Big freeze puts Scottish football back in spotlight

The Scottish game came under scrutiny once again, this weekend it was mother nature making the headlines, not the referees.

Throughout the week the big freeze affected all of Britain and the SPL management took the controversial decision to postpone all of their fixtures four days in advance – some may view that as a mistake, especially when the SFL gave their clubs as big a chance as possible to get their fixtures on. However, Alloa vs Peterhead in the Second Division was the only survivor.

Supporters of the “higher ranked” clubs in Scotland must surely be scratching their heads in disbelief at how a Second Division club (part-time too I may add!) can work round the clock to ensure their ground and the surrounding areas can be fit for purpose, yet the full time clubs can’t seem to do the same.

Nevertheless hats off to Alloa and all of their backroom staff and supporters who lent a hand (or shovel as the case may be) to clear the snow from the pitch, terraces and areas outside the ground. To top off their generosity, the local Indian restaurant chipped in their piece by offering the Peterhead players and officials free curries for their long journey home. It would be refreshing to see this catching on around the country!
