Major change ahead at the SPL

It is reported this morning that major change could be on its way in the SPL with the recommendations due to be discussed at an SPL meeting next Monday.

Among the changes being proposed by the SPL Strategic Working Group are;

• Two tier SPL of ten teams each
• Play off for promotion and relegation
• Regionalised lower leagues
• Winter Break with an earlier start to the season

Nothing too exciting there really that will have fans flooding back through the turnstiles.

It does make you wonder who these people talk to before making these decisions. Almost everyone I speak to is thoroughly fed up playing the same teams four times per season.

This proposal will see the season reduced by two games and does appear to get rid of the much derided split.

Surely there must be a way to get back to playing each other only twice per season. We must be the only “major” League in Europe that has teams playing each other four times per season.

There must surely be a case for a League of 16 teams, playing each other twice giving us 30 games. If you need more games then add play offs to this structure.

I am pretty sure that a recent SPL fans summary came out pretty strongly against playing each other four times per season but it would appear the “customer” is away down the pecking order in Scottish football.

All of this seems to me to be akin to re-arranging the deckchairs as the Titanic sinks!
