Celtic and Motherwell through to fifth round

Celtic and Motherwell saw off lower League opposition this afternoon to progress to the Fifth Round of the Scottish Cup.

Motherwell made easier progress than Celtic with a comfortable win at Dundee while Celtic made heavy weather of seeing off Third Division Berwick Rangers.

Motherwell made the best possible start by scoring within three minutes of the start of the game with Murphy setting up Sutton to score with a left volley at the front post.

Well made it two just after the break when the same two combined again with Murphy again the provider and Sutton the finisher. Motherwell then sealed the tie in the closing minutes with goals from Jennings and Murphy.

There was still time for Dundee to be reduced to ten men when Griffith took out his frustration on Steven Hammell with a wild tackle which earned him a straight red card.

Celtic introduced new signing Freddy Ljunberg for the first time but it didn’t stop them toiling to see off the brave resistance of Berwick Rangers.

Daniel Majstorovic fired in a close range shot to give Neil Lennon's side a 17th-minute lead at Shielfield Park. But the visitors struggled for long spells on a bumpy pitch against spirited Third Division opponents.

Sub Scott Brown fired in a neat angled strike on 81 minutes to ease Celtic into the fifth round of the tournament.
