Should summer football be on tomorrow’s agenda?

With the SPL meeting tomorrow to review the future of Scottish football should we finally face up to playing in the summer.

I am a traditionalist who has attended winter football for almost 50 years, but what was acceptable when I started going to the game may no longer be acceptable.

It used to be okay to stand out in open terraces when the wind and rain was sweeping in, and we got drenched. This was acceptable as I grew up, but ask a youngster now to stand in the rain would they be happy to do it? I don’t think so.

If you look at yesterday we saw Motherwell and Inverness trying to deal with this swirling wind and rain which made the ball unpredictable in its flight, along with a glue pot of a pitch. We also saw the Dundee Utd v Hearts game called off at short notice with fans already travelling, thanks to the rain that fell in Dundee.

We have also had people sitting at games with the temperature at -10 degress, games called off as the surrounding areas are unsafe. None of this seems progress in the 21^st Century.

Hopefully if Neil Doncaster and his crew are looking at radical change to our game that this is at least on the agenda for consideration.

I know there will be clashes with summer sports, the World Cup, holidays etc but imaginative fixture planning will help. Also with holidays, people are go on holiday all year round these days.

Therefore there is no real excuse to consider this….
