Thirds old ground being re-vitalised

Actor Simon Weir is on a one man mission to breathe new life back into Third Lanark’s old Cathkin Park.

River City star Simon has been spending his spare time trying to remove 40 years of moss from the boundary wall that separates the still intact terracing from the pitch.

Weir started the project when he discovered a family link back to the now defunct Glasgow club. He discovered his great-grandfather played for the club and that sparked his imagination.

He has had a bit of a setback when local hooligans painted graffiti on the wall but this had not daunted him and he is now looking to re-paint all the crash barriers on the terracing in the club’s old red colour.

This is a project worth backing as a trip to the site is eerie and does bring back images of an old age when senior football was played on the site. This was also the home of the second Hampden Park before the National Stadium moved just up the road.
