Second half storm sets up Ayr win

Five goals in the second half at Airdrie this afternoon sealed an unlikely victory for the Honest Men and keeps them in the hunt for a play off place.

The first half was an even affair with Ayr’s new signing, former Scotland Under 21 keeper Alan Martin, being forced to make a stunning save in the top corner keeping out a Jamie Stevenson free kick.

While making the save Martin actually dislocated one finger and burst another one over. He had to play on as there was no doctor in the ground, despite numerous calls from the PA to find one!

Given the even nature of the first half there was a real shock with what happened in the second period.

Ayr took the lead five minutes after the break, Scott McLaughlin’s through ball split the home defence and Moffat’s flick sent Paul Willis clear to drill the ball home through the keeper’s legs.

In 62 minutes it was two and it was a stunning goal, Mark Roberts picked up a loose ball 35 yards out, he looked up and sent a beautiful lob over the keeper.

From then on it was one way traffic as the Airdrie defence collapsed allowing the visitors to run in three more goals.

The third came in 69 minutes, a long ball released Moffat who out paced the defence rounded the keeper and slid the ball into the empty net for his first goal for the club.

The last two goals came in the last ten minutes, Trouten saw a shot saved before McLaughlin rolled in the rebound. The fifth came from a penalty when Rodgers was fouled by Grant, who was shown a straight red, and Rodgers got up to take the kick himself sending Ridgers the wrong way.
