Former Ranger Maurice Ross is training with Saint Mirren with a view to helping for the rest of the season.

Saints have a problem at right back with David Van Zanten injured, and Ross is seen as a possible replacement.

Ross has recently been in China playing with Beijing, one of a number of clubs he has played from since leaving Rangers in 2005, across a number of countries. He has played in England, Norway and Turkey as well as China.

He played 72 times for Rangers and in the six years since leaving has struggled to match that number with the assorted clubs he has played for.

While it is always important to have bodies in the squad bringing someone back to Scotland who has played at the top level is not always the answer. Motherwell tried it with Bob Malcolm and that didn’t work for them.

This comes across as a desperate move from Saints, particularly given they are almost certain to stay up without this move.
