Top six almost decided?

Well v United - top 6?

After Hibs dropping two points late in the game against Hearts yesterday, is the top six almost complete.

At the start of the weekend there were five team still in with a chance of taking the last top six place; Motherwell, Inverness, St. Johnstone, Hibs and Aberdeen. But by last night it was almost down to two contenders, Motherwell and ICT.

Motherwell’s win over Aberdeen put them nine points ahead of the Dons. By the time Brown and Boyle had settled their differences the Dons were left knowing if they win their three games they will still miss out.

St. Johnstone drew 0-0 with Kilmarnock, this leaves them six points behind Motherwell with three games to play. The good thing for Motherwell is that two of those games are against the Old Firm, although both are at McDiarmid Park. It looks as though this could rule out the Saints.

This result ensured Killie were a certainty for the top six, alongside Celtic, Rangers, Hearts and Dundee Utd.

Then along came the Edinburgh derby, and with Hibs 2-1 up they were back in the race, only five points off sixth. But Elliot’s equaliser dropped them seven points behind Well, with a trip to Celtic Park up next, it is likely this will end their hopes.

This leaves Inverness, whose game with Celtic was called off on Sat. They have three games to go and are only four points behind, with games against Celtic, Killie and Hearts to come. Can they muster four points from that if the Well don’t take any points from their two games with Dundee Utd and Hearts.

The Highlanders do have a bit of an advantage, as they will play their last two games before the split after Motherwell have completed their 33 games. Although you would think if the Fir Park side cane take anything from their two games that could be enough.

No doubt things won’t run to plan and there will be twists and turns along the way….
