Rangers facing UEFA charge on Sectarian singing

UEFA said today they would be looking into reports of sectarian singing at the Europa League tie in Eindhoven last month – are they doing enough?

Rangers are to face a UEFA disciplinary hearing over allegations of sectarian singing during last month's Europa Lague match away to PSV Eindhoven.

The Rangers board have acted vigorously to defend their position, but the crux of the defence does not seem to be there is no problem, rather there are others who also deserve investigation.

While I can’t remember the specifics of the Eindhoven game, I was at the League Cup Final against Celtic and couldn’t believe how the vast majority joined in the party songs.

This makes me think Rangers have moved into deflection mode rather than come out and admit the problem has crept back in, they are now wanting to drag others into the whole problem.

If this was a small minority or a rare occurrence you would maybe have some sympathy for them but it’s not, and despite the undoubted good work the club have done, the problem is not going away.

It would appear there is a major show of defiance from the core support that says the more you condemn or try to control the more we will belt our the songs.

While it is all very good handing out song sheets and whatever, maybe it is time for stronger action. There is a strict control over season tickets and away ticket allocation, surely they could take away season ticket rights from offenders. Even more draconian would be to report them to the police for due legal action to be taken.

But I strongly believe both Rangers and Celtic can’t let this type of thing go as this is what keeps many going to Celtic Park and Ibrox and makes them different from the other clubs.

Let’s see some positive action and maybe there will be some sympathy for Rangers from the wider football community!
