Tough week for SPL reconstruction

This week has seen clubs begin to show their hands in the run up to this month’s vote for reconstruction, with Dundee Utd say they will not vote for 10 team League.

Dundee United Chairman Steven Thomson this week has come out publicly in Radio and the Press to express his opposition to the top ten proposal.

The proposal for a smaller league is part of a major strategy document, and Thomson is keen to see some other aspects of the document implemented; merge governing bodies, start the season earlier, have play offs and a winter break.

Thomson is not convinced the 10 team league is the only way ahead for the top flight, as its supporters have said, believing we could have play offs in the current set up and therefore adding the excitement the League needs.

There is no doubt that would have made the bottom six much more exciting this season, along with adding depth and excitement into the First Division.

It would appear United have support from Kilmarnock and Inverness, but others appear to be convinced either way just yet.

Motherwell Vice Chairman Derek Weir has said this week that there would need to be a number of tweaks to the current proposal before the Fir Park club would get behind the proposal.

He is looking for only one team in a top 10 League to be involved in a play off, and no change for next season to allow planning for the season starting in July.

Like Thomson he sees a number of good things in the proposal, no surprise he was part of the group who put it together!

Who knows where this is going but it seems certain we will not see any change to next season’s top League size.
