Ayr and Albion seal promotion

Albion Rovers and Ayr United both clinched promotion after play off aggregate wins this afternoon.

Ayr United made it with a dramatic win at Glebe Park, they came back from a goal down at half time to win 2-1.

The game was held up by five minutes to allow the large crowd to get into the ground for this vital game, proof there is an appetite for play offs in Scotland.

In blustery conditions, Brechin scored in 44 minutes when sub Jonathan Tiffoney's attempted back-pass to goalkeeper Alan Martin rolled into his own net. Tiffoney had only been on the pitch for a matter of minutes after replacing the injure Jim Lauchlan.

Ayr's pressure paid off with 13 minutes to go when the ball broke to Mark Roberts and he rounded the impressive Craig Nelson and knocked the ball home. Then in the 88th minute Moffat slammed the ball under Nelson for the winner.

In the Second Division play off Albion Rovers survived a late fight back from Annan Athletic to seal a 4-3 aggregate win despite losing 2-1 on the afternoon.

The breakthrough came on 23 minutes when Keiron Donnelly scored the opener for Rovers, heading home a Steven Canning Corner from three yards out. This looked to have effectively sealed the tie and promotion for the Rovers for the first time since 1989.

The second half was to prove interesting for the home side’s Brian Gilfillan, after six minutes he equalised from 18 yards after poor Rovers defending. He then netted his second five minutes after the hour mark before being handed a straight red card for a head-butt.

The Rovers held out and will take their place in the Second Division next season, in what is fitting reward for the excellent work done by Paul Martin and his backroom team.
