SPL Player of the Month shocker.

Surely I am not the only person who is surprised to read today Paul Gallacher of Dunfermline has been named SPL Player of the Month.

When I read the Player of the Month for August had been announced I assumed it was bound to be someone from the Old Firm or the clubs who had pushed towards the top of the table.

Rangers Steven Naismith had a good shout given the goals he has scored to keep the Ibrox club top of the table despite an opening day draw with Hearts.

I’m not sure anyone at Celtic has been firing on all cylinders yet but the usual suspects of Kayal and Ki could well have been in contention.

Motherwell have only lost one game and are sitting joint top and probably have a number of players who are pushing for a claim. Nicky Law has been a breath of fresh air in the SPL, Tom Hateley has been outstanding at right back and Stephen Craigan playing the best football of his career. That’s just to name three….

AtSt.Mirren they have been boosted by Gary Teale and Stephen Thompson as well as Paul McGowan.

I think all of the above are away out in front of Gallacher who may have saved two penalties but as soon as his side played anyone of the form sides he shipped four at home to Motherwell.

He has helped his side to fifth in the table – what an achievement being five points behind Motherwell and level with Hearts and St. Mirren.

Maybe the wine was flowing too freely at the lunch when the award was made.

It will be interesting to see if Colin Calderwood gets the Manager of the Month award ahead of Stuart McCall or Ally McCoist or Danny Lennon.
