Ref O’Reilly admits he got it wrong.

Referee Stevie O’Reilly admitted he made a mistake when he sent off Inverness’s Greg Tansey against Celtic last weekend.

At the SFA review of the decision today the referee admitted he called the incident wrong at the time, and he considered it wasn’t even a yellow having watched it back!

While I am delighted some common sense has been shown at last but I am shocked it has been dropped to no card at all. The major worry for me here is how could he have called it so wrong on the day?

BBC pundit Billy Dodds has been critical of this ref recently on both Sportsound and his Sunday Herald column. He has mentioned he is too quick to produce his cards rather than manage the game through his personality.

Hopefully this incident will help make Mr O’Reilly a better referee, maybe he will learn to think before he rushes to his pocket for his cards (whatever colour). This can only be good for the Scottish game.

On the other side of the incident, while common sense has prevailed today, Inverness were forced to play with only ten men for long time and the decision probably had a major influence on the game.
